History of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc.

Winn-Dixie was founded by William Milton Davis and his sons Artemus Darius Davis, James Elsworth Davis, Milton Austin Davis and Tine Wayne Davis.   Mr. William Davis started his business in Burley, Idaho where he bought a general store in 1914 that he named Davis Mercantile.   In 1925 he borrowed $10,000 from his father and moved to Miami, Florida where he purchased the Rockmoor Grocery store.   Later in 1927 he renamed his business Table Supplies which he created a chain of thirty-three stores across Florida from Miami to Tampa. In 1934 he died leaving his stores to his four sons who took charge of the company.

In 1939 the four brothers bought the chain stores of Winn-Lovett which increased their business by seventy-three stores. The brothers adopted the company name Win-Lovett and moved the headquarters to Jacksonville.   In 1945 they proceeded to buy the Steiden Store chain of thirty-one stores in Kentucky.

They continued to grow buying up chain stores in the south until they became the first industrial corporation based in Florida to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Finally in 1955 they bought up so many different chain stores and added them to their group of chains and decided to change their name to Winn-Dixie. From that time forward they are known as the Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc.
