History of Whataburger

Whataburger is a regionally held fast food restaurant that specializes in hamburgers. The company was established by Harmon Dobson and opened up first in Corpus Christi, Texas on August 8, 1950.   Whataburger had expanded into Texas, Tennessee and Florida with 17 locations by 1960.

Today Whataburger is still owned and operated by the Dobson family and they have over 700 locations in the United States.   The corporate headquarters moved to San Antonio in 2009. The restaurant is known for its orange-and-white striped roofed buildings. The newer buildings are built much like other fast food buildings except they still kept the triangular shaped roof. The menu has many variations of Whataburger and they are:

  • Whataburger Jr. which is just a smaller version of the original Whataburger.
  • The Justaburger which is a Whataburger Jr. with only mustard, pickles, and onions.
  • The Whatacatch fish sandwich.
  • The Whatachick’n Chickensandwich
  • Taquitos

Job Description/Average Wage

Cashier: The cashier takes the customers check and charges them for their order They must make sure that they give the right amount of change back to the customer. The cashier must also make sure that at the end of the shift their cash drawer is in balance. The average wage for a Whataburger cashier is 7.80 an hour.

Server: The Whataburger server is responsible for serving the customers their order. They must make sure that the customers get their orders while it is hot. Often the server takes the order from the customers and presents it to the kitchen cook. The average wage is $12.00 an hour for a Whataburger server.

Supervisor: You’re going to watch over an entire shift when the main manager isn’t on duty.   You’re going to assign tasks, make sure the store is running at 100%, as well as making sure that everything is cooked and stocked properly.   You   may also assist customers with some complicated issues as well.   The average wage is $9 to $13 a hour.

Manager: The Whataburger manager is responsible for the operations of the restaurant, employees and customer satisfaction. The Whataburger manager earns $45,000 to $60,000 a year in accordance with their restaurants sales.
