History of Souplantation

Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes are the two names given the same buffet style chain of United States restaurants. The primary Souplantation opened in San Diego in 1978, and the company was incorporated as Garden Fresh Corp., in 1983. Souplantation locations were frequently in Southern California and then developed to Florida and other areas under the name Sweet Tomatoes.

The restaurants include a wide salad bar, several soups, pastas, breads, pizza and muffins. There are also a variety of fountain drinks, a fruit and dessert counter and ice cream machine. All restaurants manage on an all-you-can-eat basis. The primary Souplantation restaurant opened on Mission Gorge Road in San Diego in 1978. This restaurant and a second one were purchased in 1983 by Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp., established by Michael Mack to operate the chain.

The company has expanded across the west and southwest and has locations in several Southeast states including 19 restaurants in Florida. They also have stores in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and Utah.

As of 2008, the company had 110 restaurants in 15 states and claims to have served 265 million guests since 1978. The company also uses a kitchen cabinet of mothers to counsel it on product development and customer service.The chain has received several awards.

Job Description/Average Wage

General Manager: The postion is accountable for the daily direction of the operations of the restaurant in keeping with company policies, procedures and budgetary objectives. General manager direct actions that impact store sales, profits, personnel, controls and are accountable for all activities that go on in the restaurant at all times. The annual salary for this position is around $38,000-$42,000.

Service Manager: The position is in charge of crew recruiting, training, shift management, inventory and crew retention. This is the stepping stone to learning about all restaurant operations. The average wage for this job is $16 — $18 an hour.

Production Manager: The PM monitors inventory, ordering, recipe/menu compliance, food prep, and works hand-in-hand with the team to motivate the crew and run a successful shift. The average wage for this job is $50,000 — $57,000 annualy.

Cashiers: As a Cashier you will be responsible for maintaining outstanding customer service, processing sales quickly, accurately and efficiently, cash register operations and safeguarding company assets. The average wage for this job is $7 — $18 an hour.

 

Server: A Server for Fatburger’s works with customers taking their orders, setting up their drinks, and then bringing their food to the table. The servers must be enjoyable and able to explain the dishes that are on the menu to the customer. The average wage for an hourly server is $8.00 an hour.

Dishwashers: Job purpose of Dishwasher is to keep and maintain the kitchen as well as the equipment. Key duties and responsibilities of Dishwasher:

• Clean the drains.
• Clean the loading dock.
• Clean the fish file.
• Clean the tilt skillet.
• Help in the plate ups.
• Load dishwasher with dirty dishes as needed.
• Keep and sustain a clean workstation at all times.
• Make sure that the dishes are dirt free and sanitized
• Sweep and mop kitchen as required.
• Clean walls as desired.

The average salary for this job is $7 — $10 an hour.
