Staples, Inc started when the founder Thomas G. Stemberg was working on a proposal for a different business but needed a ribbon for his printer. He/She found out that the local dealer was closed for Independence Day holiday and often had to order in supplies after the customer made the request. He/She was so frustrated with having to rely on small stores for critical supplies that he decided to open up an office supply superstore. The very first store was opened in Brighton, Massachusetts in 1986 and the 500th store was opened in Vero Beach, Florida in 1996. From that time forward Staples, Inc. has grown into one of the largest office supply business’s of modern society.

Job description/ Average wage

Sales Associate: Sales Associates work on the floor helping customers find the merchandise they need and explaining new products. They must make sure that when a customer is requesting a specific item for their office equipment that they get the right piece. They also help behind the cash register taking the customers money or charges for the merchandise. In some sections the sales associates take orders over the phone for special delivery to businesses. Many sales associates are trained on the job to do the specific tasks needed. Most sales associates starting wage is $7.00 an hour.

Sales Manager: The sales managers are responsible for the sales in the store helping to create ads and contacting customers. They make sure that the customer is getting proper treatment and kept up to date with new merchandise or office equipment. They are highly instrumental in making sales and keeping the business in good financial status. The average starting wage for a sales manager is $43,625.

Copy Center: Working in the copy center, you’re going to help with printing, faxing, scanning and more.   You’re going to help any customer with problems or issues that they have, as well as processing orders that they need help with.   The average wage varies anywhere from $8 to $11 a hour.

Easy Tech Associate: The easy tech associate must be familiar with all sorts of office equipment and especially with computers. They must be able to help customers with questions about their systems and help them choose the right type of add on equipment; install pieces of equipment for example:

  • Printers
  • Fax Machines
  • Copiers
  • Webcams

Also the easy tech associate maybe ask to go out into the field and check out any office equipment that has been sold by the store, or repair or replace a defective part. The average starting wage is $8.00 – $11.00 an hour depending on experience, education, and time with the company.

    • I have worked as cashier for over 10 years also as custom service here. It’s a great place to work, but keep in mind that there are a lot of times you won’t even get hours here!
