History of Ross Stores

Ross is headquartered in San Bruno, California operating under the name of Ross Dress for Less. Ross Stores are the third largest off-price stores in the United States. Only TJ Max and Marshalls excels them. Ross Stores operate 953 stores in 27 U.S. states and Guam. Adali Baer opened up the first Ross Stores in 1957 as a department store.

The format was changed in 1982 to an off price department store in order to increase their business. Ross Stores also operates what is known as DD’s discount stores. This is a chain of both clothing and furniture geared to cater to the lower income consumers with prices below those of their main Ross Stores. The DD stands for deep discounts. Normally Ross Stores operates beside their counterpart DD’s discount.

Ross Job Description/ Average Wage

Retail Associate Hourly: The retail associate usually works in one of the departments and must be very familiar with the products in order to help the customer find what they need. They usually help with some of the stocking and make sure that all the shelves are kept clean the aisles cleared and the newest products are put out for the customers. They are often responsible to make sure that sales items are kept out for the customer to find. The retail associate usually earns $7.53 an hour.

Cashier: The cashier is the one who takes cash, check or charge card for the products that the customer wishes to buy. They make sure that the cash register is kept in balance. They should be friendly and helpful to the customers. The average wage is $7.65 an hour for the cashier.

Stocker: The stocker usually unloads trucks when merchandise arrives, prices it while still in the warehouse and then places it on the floor for the retail associate to place on the shelf or on an end cap. The retail associate may instruct the stocker where to put the merchandise and have them put it on a shelf. The stocker must make sure that all the product is made available as it is needed. The average wage for the stocker is $7.81 an hour.

Sales Associate: Working the floor, you’re going to be responsible for helping customers on the floor. You’re going to help keep your area tidy, as well as ensure that all the product is on the main floor in the right area. There are times when you will have to help in the backroom bringing product to the front. The average wage is anywhere from $7 to $9 a hour.

Assistant Manager: Assisting the main manager, you’re going to help with various management paperwork, assigning tasks to various employees, as well as helping with tasks around the store. You will report the main manager with any comments, questions or concerns. The average wage is anywhere from $10 to $15 a hour.
