History of Office Depot

The Office Depot was founded by three partners in 1986 named Stephen Dougherty, Pat Sher, and Jack Kopkin. The idea that they envisioned was a warehouse-style store for office products where customers could purchase items in bulk for discounted prices. The concept leads them to the start up of the Office Depot which opened its first stores in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida in 1986. The company saw steady growth throughout the years, and opened the 1000th Office Depot North American retail store in Countryside, Illinois in 2005.   It was not until 1988 that the initial offering of public stock began.

They acquired much other business and grew until they now have many stores outside of the United States into other countries.   They also introduced “Green Book” catalog of environmentally-preferred products, as well as the first free, nationwide in-store electronics recycling program and free, in-store cell phone and rechargeable battery recycling program in all stores in the U.S. and Canada.

As of 2009, its reported revenue was $12.144 billion with more than 42,000 employees.

Job description/ Average wage

Customer Service Specialist: The customer service specialist is in charge of transactions with the customers, finding them the right merchandise, and helping them to become familiar with the store in itself. Often they go out into the field to the business and keep up with their inventory supplies restocking their supply closets as needed. Most customer service specialist earns an average of $10.00 an hour.

Store Manager: The store manager is responsible for the operations of the store, including hiring, firing, schedules, sales, marketing, and a variety of other duties.     You will maintain the store in order to make sure that the customers have an easy access to supplies and information that they needed as well as to maintain services, facilities, stock, supplies and inventories updated and available.Most store managers earn an average of $61,797 a year for their job position.

Department Manager: The department manager is responsible for the crew that works in his/her department. They must make sure that they have enough scheduled people to work, supplies are kept on the floor, and that customers are taken care of as needed with a friendly smile.     A department manager will supervise and control the department and its employees as well as the functions and sales of the unit in order to meet the desired profit goals. You will do and maintain product presentations, system of processing daily cash transactions by assorting any excess and shortage, and lead department employees’ activities. Department Managers earn an average of $14.00 an hour.

Assistant Store Manager: You will help the store manager in selling the products of this company and supervise and control all operations and activities in the store. You will also produce more sales by encouraging the whole team to deliver the best quality of customer service and greet the clients as they enter the establishment. The common pay for this position ranges from $43,436 a year.

Assistant Manager: You will be the one to provide support and assistance to the daily administration of company’s operations and this includes hiring and terminating of individuals, constructing work schedules as well as finalizing sales transactions. The average wage for this job is $43,178 annually.

Manager: You are responsible in managing, directing and preparing the company’s operations and will formulate rules and policies for the improvement of the institution. You will the routine operations and will make a plan for the utilization of materials and human resources available. The average wage for this job is $67,692 yearly.
