History of HNB Bank

Today, HNB has risen to the zenith in banking. We have been acknowledged globally by The Banker as the Bank of the Year twice over and won numerous local and global awards. We have now centralized administrative operations at our landmark HNB Tower, used cutting edge technology to automate our network, equipped our team with skills befitting a futuristic bank and worked with stakeholders and the environment to ensure that we manage social and environmental impacts sustainably and with accountability.

It was in 1888 in Ceylon when HNB history can be traced.   It was named Hatton Bank, the lifeline to thousands of plantation workers. Brown & Company has acquired the bank after the Great Depression in 1930. Then, that begins the nationalization process of the bank in the 1970s saw the Bank acquiring the branches of National Grindlays Bank in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, the bank name was changed into Hatton National Bank, as it is known today. Just a year later, HNB opened its first branch in Gampola and continued to expand with branches in Pussellawa and Maskeliya. This expansion continues even today, with HNB possessing Sri Lanka’s largest network of branches among private commercial banks. In the mid 1980s, HNB transformed banking to a service that penetrated the entire country. HNB continued the establishment of over 154 Student Banking Centers.

Tellers: These positions will perform duties such as balancing the currency, coin, and checks in cash drawers at ends of shifts, and calculate daily transactions using computers, calculators, or adding machines; cashing checks and pay out money after verifying that signatures are correct, that written and numerical amounts agree, and that accounts have sufficient funds; receiving checks and cash for deposit, verify amounts, and check accuracy of deposit slips; examining checks for endorsements and to verify other information such as dates, bank names, identification of the persons receiving payments and the legality of the documents; entering customers’ transactions into computers in order to record transactions and issue computer-generated receipts; counting currency, coins, and checks received, by hand or using currency-counting machine, in order to prepare them for deposit or shipment to branch banks or the Federal Reserve Bank; checking transaction mistakes when debits and credits do not balance.

Commercial Team Leader: This person is responsible for the development and implementation of a team strategy to meet assigned goals, mitigate risk and underwrite transactions that are originated by the corporate banking team; ensures that overall portfolio of relationships and transactions are in alignment with the risk profile of the bank; responsible for maintaining acceptable levels of credit quality, consistent with the bank’s credit policies, procedures, and guidelines including regular monthly, quarterly and annual portfolio tracking/reporting within established tolerances; maintains a highly credible relationship between portfolio management and HNB’s credit approval authorities; develops robust portfolio analysis processes and data capture processes that manage risk and that generate valuable market insights to management and clients that help the bank and clients win; accountable for identifying client needs within the portfolio and referring to corporate banking team for urgent execution to drive revenue growth and market share growth.

Financial Advisor: The Financial Advisors (Retail Investment Associate Team Leaders) provide “Simply the Best” customer service at all times.In this position, you will be responsible for sales and coaching which will be achieved by executing the following daily activities: coaching and mentoring licensed bankers; cultivating great bank relationships by being visible daily in assigned banking offices; making outbound sales phone calls; following up on sales leads; assisting in closing business; maintaining compliance with all Huntington Investment Company, HNB and HBI policies as it pertains to job duties.
