History of Wegmans
Wegmans is a privately owned family run supermarket. The supermarket founded in 1916 by John and Walter Wegmans was originally known by the name Rochester Fruit and Vegetable Company. Robert Wegmans was the son of the co-founder and had distinguished himself as a pioneer in the retail food business, as well as a generous donor to educational institutions and other charities. Mr. Wegmans died April 20, 2006 leaving his two daughters in charge of the business.
The one daughter Colleen Wegmans is president and his other daughter Nicole Wegmans is vice-president. Danny Wegmans is CEO of the company. The stores stayed in New York until 1993 when they expanded out of state opening up their first in Erie, Pennsylvania. The expansion continued opening up new stores in New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland. They do have plans to open up more stores in Massachusetts by 2011. Wegmans Food Markets ranked 29 on the Supermarket News list of the Top 75 North American Food Retailers based on sales volume.
Job Description/ Average Wage
Cashier: The cashier is responsible for good customer service. They must check the customers products out of the cash register then charge them for the items that they have bought. They are responsible to keep their area clean and stocked with items that belong on the end cap. They must keep their cash drawer in balance and the give the customer the correct amount of change. The average wage for a cashier is $8.50 an hour.
Department Manager: The individual department managers are in charge of good customer service, training the employees, along with keeping the aisle stocked with merchandise. The department manager must make sure that all sale items are put out or marked correctly for the customers. Then after the sale the manager is responsible to remove the items or mark them at the regular price. The average wage for a department manager is $60,000 a year.
Meat Customer Service: This person is responsible for the meat department making sure that all the meat is put out and that it is fresh. They must remove any meats that are old or out dated. They take meat orders from the customers and let the butcher know so that they can prepare the cuts of meat the way the customers prefer. The average wage for the meat customer service person is $12.00 an hour.
