History of Staples

Staples, Inc started when the founder Thomas G. Stemberg was working on a proposal for a different business but needed a ribbon for his printer. He/She found out that the local dealer was closed for Independence Day holiday and often had to order in supplies after the customer made the request. He/She was so frustrated with having to rely on small stores for critical supplies that he decided to open up an office supply superstore. The very first store was opened in Brighton, Massachusetts in 1986 and the 500th store was opened in Vero Beach, Florida in 1996. From that time forward Staples, Inc. has grown into one of the largest office supply business’s of modern society.
