History of Kohl’s

In 1962 Max Kohl opened the first of many Kohl’s Stores in Brookfield, Wisconsin. In 1972 Kohl’s had grown and expanded into five separate department stores. After BATUS, Inc. purchased a 80% stake in the Kohl’s Stores, the Kohl family withdrew from the company and over the next Kohl’s grew from 10 stores to 39 stores in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana in less then a decade.

The company is one of the biggest discount department store chains in the United States, with over 230 outlets, mainly in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. Targeting middle income shoppers purchasing for their families and homes, the chain sustains low retail prices throughout low cost structure, limited staffing, with progressive management information systems, as well as the economical application of centralized buying, distribution, and advertising. This Kohl’s concept has proved triumphant in both small and large markets, and in strip shopping centers, regional malls, as well as freestanding venues.
