History of Gordon Trucking

Gordon Trucking is one of the largest truckload carriers in North America and is considered to be one of the safest and most reliable large truckload carriers. The company offers local, regional and trans-continental truckload services within the United States and to and from Canada including temperature control and regional heavy haul service.

Looking back Gordon Trucking’s history, it started in 1946 with just two trucks, Jay Gordon started out hauling beer from Vancouver, WA to Tacoma, WA for his first customer, the Lucky Lager Brewery. In 1984, Jay sold the company to his son Larry and his wife Virginia. Today the company is owned by Larry and Virginia Gordon and their sons Steve and Scott Gordon.

Job Description/Wage Averages

Maintenance Team Leader: The Maintenance Team Leader (MTL) is Gordon Trucking’s link between the organization and both drivers and technicians. The primary responsibility of this position is to coach/mentor approximately 10 technicians and achieve specific customer service and key factor goals. These goals include meeting all customer service estimated time of availability requirements, achieving equipment standards, maintaining an excellent safety record and retaining safe technicians who provide excellent customer service. The Team Leader is expected to use an open, interactive leadership style to reconcile technician and driver needs.

Driver Manager: This position has the following tasks: Manage 50-60 drivers at any given time. Review work assignments to ensure they are within legal and safe hours and dispatch accordingly.   Primary point of contact for drivers; respond to messages via phone, Qualcomm and voice mail in a timely manner.  Resolve driver needs. Act as liaison between drivers and internal departments/external customers.  Work with Fleet Managers on driver and truck safety, productivity, maintenance and driver satisfaction.  Develop drivers to be safe, efficient and productive.  Monitor drivers in transit using company systems to ensure on time pick-up and delivery.  Plan/schedule and monitor load activity.   Enter, update and investigate service failures.  Document and conduct driver performance reviews.  Coordinate communication across all departments of the company where needed.   Communicate, document and help coordinate maintenance issues.  Remain in compliance with all company dispatch and planning processes and procedures.

Service Writer: This person is assigned in the maintenance department. He/She is responsible in communicating directly and effectively with shop management; completing familiarization of all phases of work completed by a trailer service and tractor mechanic; providing a check-in point for drivers. Probe drivers for extent of repairs; scheduling and planning related work in the shop directly with the mechanics; working directly with scheduler at VFI, OTR, and other GTI shops for related items; assisting with overseeing correct data entry on all repair orders. Focus on and insure accuracy of all data and codes going into system; providing real-time updated information in the shop status screens in the computer (4 hours or more). Provide up-to-date information as exceptions arise for operations; communicating with drivers, information regarding status of repairs, parts on order, etc.

Mobile Truck and Trailer Mechanic: This person is responsible for Responsible for the inspection, maintenance and service of all GTI equipment on the road and at off site locations. Must be able to troubleshoot, diagnose and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on fleet vehicles and trailers.
