History of Game Stop

Game Stop is known as the world’s largest video game retailer with over 6,200 stores located throughout the United States and 17 countries. Game Stop proudly proclaims that they are the store for gamers around the world.  Game Stop headquarters is located in Grapevine, Texas which is a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas. The company actually operates stores under the following names:

  • GameStop
  • EB Games
  • Babbages
  • Micromania
  • MovieStop
  • Funcoland

They also operate two e-commerce websites, Gamestop.com and EBgames.com. They also provide their customers with access to their magazine “Game Informer.”  Game Stop was created when the head of Barnes & Noble Mr. Leonard Riggio announced that he and a group of investors were going to put in place the financing to keep the company NeoStar going adding new merchandise for the Christmas holidays. Mr. Riggio did declare that they did not like the name NeoStar instead thought the name Babbage’s Etc. was more suitable since the company had merged with them. The judge sided with Leonard Riggio and his group from Barnes & Noble’s to keep the company going. It seems that NeoStar owed so much money that they could no longer get any more merchandise from their creditors and had to go bankrupt. Barnes & Noble’s executives would be keeping more people working and their idea would save the company. November 12, 2004, GameStop spun off from Barnes & Noble.

Since Mr. Leonard Riggio was involved with the whole project employees from both companies still receive employee discounts at each other’s stores, despite the companies being completely separate.
